Kent delight at Tredwell call-up

Kent coach Paul Farbrace says James Tredwell is the "perfect replacement" for Graeme Swann for England's first two one-day games in South Africa.

Tredwell was called up as cover after Swann suffered a side strain.

Farbrace told BBC Radio Kent: "He's just as good a cricketer as Graeme Swann in terms of batting and bowling.

"I think he thoroughly deserves it and I think he's worked very hard, not just over this last summer but over a long period of time, to get where he is."

Farbrace added: "This is the confidence boost he needs after a brilliant season for Kent."

Tredwell took 14 wickets in 14 one-day games for Kent last season and set new career-best figures of 6-27 in their Friends Provident Trophy win over Middlesex in May.

"I just hope he gets an opportunity, but equally if he doesn't, it shows him he's still in the England picture and has got a chance if he continues to do well," Farbrace said.

"He knows what it means to play for England. He's very excited by that, but he won't be fazed by it.

Given the opportunity, he will score runs and he's going to be a very fine player for years to come

Farbrace on Joe Denly

"I think that's why England have turned to him in a difficult time with a few injuries. They've gone for someone they know they can trust. They can throw the ball to him if they need him and he won't be overawed by the situation, and that's typical of Treddy really."

Tredwell toured New Zealand with England's one-day squad in 2008, but did not play in any of the games.

Meanwhile, Farbrace is hoping that the England selectors will keep faith with batsman Joe Denly for the first one-day match on Friday, despite his disappointing display with the bat so far in South Africa.

"He is a young player and he has shown glimpses and they have selected him based on his potential for the future, " said Farbrace.

"There's a lot of potential in Joe and I think that the great thing about being on an England tour at a young age is you're exposed to a completely different media circus, so there's the hype and everything that goes with playing for England.

"That hasn't fazed Joe. He's someone who takes it in his stride and gets on with it.

"I don't think that this will be doing him any harm whatsoever. He's a strong, resilient character. He'll enjoy being involved, but he'll know he hasn't scored the runs he'd like to have scored.

Farbrace added: "But given the opportunity, he will score runs and he's going to be a very fine player for years to come.

"Every player has tough times and that shows their character when they bounce back and carry on scoring runs when they get themselves back in form."
