Botha is now rated as doubtful for this summer's World Twenty20 in England |
Ireland have been given permission to bring in a replacement for injured all-rounder Andre Botha ahead of the Super Eight phase of the World Cup Qualifier. Botha, 33, has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament because of a persistent ankle problem. His replacement is left-arm seamer Phil Eaglestone, 26 - and the switch has now been rubber-stamped by the International Cricket Council. The ICC must approve any injury replacements during the tournament. Ireland, who are the only team in the Qualifier with a 100% record, play their first Super Eight match against Afghanistan on Saturday. But they have been suffering with other injuries as Kyle McCallan has a fractured rib and former captain Trent Johnston is struggling with a hamstring problem. | 606: DEBATE |
However, the arrival of Eaglestone should boost coach Phil Simmons' selection options and add variety to the bowling attack. Two other teams - Canada and Scotland - have also brought in replacements for injured players at this stage. Scotland have brought in Gordon Drummond for Gordon Goudie, while former Canada skipper John Davison has been replaced by Ashif Mulla. However, Botha is now rated as doubtful for this summer's World Twenty20 tournament, which takes place in England in June.
