Ireland clash with Canada delayed

Kyle McCallan
Kyle McCallan will captain the Ireland side at Malahide

No play was possible on the first day of Ireland's Intercontinental Cup match against Canada at Malahide on Thursday.

The weather and poor pitch conditions put pay to any prospects of play despite several pitch inspections and a couple of proposed start times.

Play will start at the earlier time of 1030 BST on Friday in attempt to make up some ground in the four-day match.

Kyle McCallan captains the Irish side in the absence of all the English county players, apart from Gary Wilson.

Ireland secured their qualification for the Twenty20 World Cup earlier in the week.

Ireland need a win to stay on course for a likely final-clash with Namibia.

The Irish defeated Canada in last year's decider at Grace Road.

However, Canada's form has dipped since they reached the 2007 final and they have claimed only one win in their six Intercontinental Cup games this season.

Canada have struggled without the runs of unavailable Ashish Bagai and he is once again missing for the Dublin clash.

An Irish victory could move them to the top of the table above Namibia.

Ireland squad: Kyle McCallan (captain), Andre Botha, Peter Connell, Alex Cusack, Thinus Fourie, Trent Johnston, Kevin O'Brien, Andrew Poynter, Paul Stirling, Reinhardt Strydom, Greg Thompson, Andrew White, Gary Wilson

Canada squad: Sanjay Thuraisingam (captain), Rustam Bhatti, Geoffrey Barnett, Harvir Baidwan, Eion Katchay, Sunil Dhaniram, Zubin Surkari, Karun Jethi, Steven Welsh, Qaiser Ali, Ruvindu Gunasekera, Mohammad Iqbal, Arvind Kandappah, Saad bin Zafar
