Brett Lee ruled out of Hampshire T20 campaign

Injury has scuppered Hampshire's hopes of bringing in Australia fast bowler Brett Lee for their Twenty20 campaign, BBC Radio Solent understands.

The 33-year-old was due to take part in the later stages of the Friends Provident t20.

But Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove confirmed an elbow injury had ruled Lee out of the competition.

Meanwhile, spinner Rangana Herath has left the county to join up with the Sri Lanka squad for the Asia Cup.

The news on Lee is another blow for the bowler who was forced to return home early from the Indian Premier League after fracturing a thumb while playing for the Kings XI Punjab against the Mumbai Indians.

Hampshire's bids to bring overseas stars to the Rose Bowl have been plagued by setbacks this year, with Shahid Afridi pulling out of his stint at the club after coming out of international retirement to captain Pakistan this summer.

There are also doubts over the arrival of Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis , who is due to replace Herath for the second half of the domestic season.
