Dimitri Mascarenhas is in the England squad for June's ICC World Twenty20 |
Hampshire skipper Dimitri Mascarenhas is keen to extend his England one-day career after another stint of IPL duty. Mascarenhas, 31, part of the Rajasthan Royals team out in South Africa, told BBC Solent: "I've still got another three or four years in me definitely. "It's obviously not as taxing as Test matches and four-day cricket." Mascarenhas is in the England squad for the NatWest Series against the West Indies staring on 21 May and has also been picked for the ICC World Twenty20. Mascarenhas had even been a contender for the England Twenty 20 captaincy, only to miss out when fellow all-rounder Paul Collingwood was handed the role. But the Australian-educated Londoner, now in his 14th year with Hampshire, will still be looking to impress. And he now has the chance to warm up for England duty in the latter half of Hampshire's Friends Provident Trophy qualification programme. Mascarenhas is expected to play against Nottinghamshire at The Rose Bowl on Tuesday (12 May, 1045 BST). | DIMITRI MASCARENHAS 16 One-day internationals 11 Twenty20 internationals |
Hampshire then head for New Road to play Worcestershire on Thursday (14 May, 1045 BST) before facing a home game with Ireland on Monday (18 May, 1430 BST). But Hampshire's final Group A game is against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge next Wednesday, the day before the start of England's three-game One-Day International Series. There is then little more than week's break before the warm-up games for the ICC World Twenty20, which runs from 5-21 June. And the the fixtures have fallen would mean Mascarenhas not being available for Championship cricket with Hampshire until 10 July. "When you play for England during the season you miss a lot of four-day cricket for Hampshire," admits Mascarenhas. "Whether that is a good or a bad thing, I'm not sure yet. "I just love playing and want to play both forms".
