Harvey set to sign for Hampshire

Hampshire are set to complete the signing of Australian all-rounder Ian Harvey as a replacement overseas player for the upcoming Twenty20 Cup.

The 36-year-old recently played for the Chennai Superstars in the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League (ICL).

Hampshire are awaiting clearance for Harvey and hope he can join them before the first Twenty20 game on Wednesday.

They had originally signed fellow Australian Shane Watson, who was then called up for Australia's one-day side.

Harvey played in 73 one-day internationals for Australia without ever playing in a Test match, and has an outstanding record in limited-overs cricket.

He has previously played county cricket for Gloucestershire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire, who had hoped to sign him as a non-overseas player last year.

That plan was quashed after Harvey had an application for British citizenship turned down by the Home Office, following a drink-driving conviction.

However, he is still able to play as an overseas player - and could make his Hampshire debut in Wednesday's Twenty20 opener against Middlesex at the Rose Bowl.

But the fact that he participated in the "rebel" ICL - as did Hampshire wicket-keeper Nic Pothas - could debar the county from representing England in the lucrative Twenty20 Champions League.

Lalit Modi, chairman of the ICC-sanctioned Indian Premier League (IPL) and a vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has claimed that any team fielding ICL players will be automatically disqualified from participating in the Champions League.
