Watson has not played for Australia since September 2007 |
Shane Watson has been called up to Australia's squad for the one day series against the West Indies. The all-rounder, who has impressed in the Indian Premier League, will replace opener Matthew Hayden who has an Achilles problem. Watson, 26, will therefore not be joining his Hampshire team-mates for the Twenty20 Cup this June. Australia and the West Indies play one Twenty20 match and five ODIs from 20 June to 6 July. Hayden, 36, has reiterated he has no plans to retire, pleasing Cricket Australia's national selection panel chairman Andrew Hilditch: "We will certainly miss Matthew, because he is such a dominant force at the top of the order. | We identified Shane as someone we thought could open the batting Andrew Hilditch, Cricket Australia | "However, this does create an opportunity to reintroduce Shane Watson back into the Australian one-day side. "Approximately 18 months ago we identified Shane as someone we thought could open the batting." Watson has not played in an ODI since April 2007, and not for Australia in any capacity for eight months. With Man of the Series performances for winner's Rajasthan Royals in the IPL scoring 472 runs while taking 17 wickets, including a half-century and 3-10 bowling figures in his side's semi-final, Watson has returned to international consideration. "Shane has had a disappointing run with injuries but has sustained his fitness levels throughout the IPL tournament," said Hilditch.
