Gloucestershire captain Alex Gidman has agreed a new two-year contract with the County Championship Division Two side.

The deal will see the 29-year-old batsman stay at Nevil Road until 2013.

Chief executive Tom Richardson told the club website: "We are delighted Alex has signed a new contract. He has been a key player over a number of years.

"We are committed to creating a new-look team capable of challenging in all competitions and Alex will be integral to guiding the team to future success."

Gidman has been with the club since 2001 and says he is delighted to have signed a new deal.

"I see this as one of the most exciting times of my career both personally and for the club," he said.

"I have been lucky enough to play with some fantastic cricketers over the years and have won two trophies. Now it is my turn to try to lead a younger team to similar success.

"The club is moving forward and I want to support the direction both on and off the pitch."

The England A international scored 1,335 runs in all competitions last season.
