Payne went to the Under 19 World Cup during the winter |
Teenager David Payne is celebrating after shattering Gloucestershire's one-day bowling record. Payne took 7-29, including four wickets in four balls in the final over, in the county's defeat against Essex. Payne, aged 19, told BBC Gloucestershire: "The wickets just kept coming. It's great to be in the record books at such a young age." "I wasn't sure I was going to get any more overs after my first four, but I did and it's great that it happened." Payne's figures better those of legendary West Indian fast bowler Courtney Walsh, who took 6-21 on two occasions in 40 over matches. The teenager added : "I was told by the coach (John Bracewell) that he was looking to use me in the one day games, so I wasn't shocked when the team was read out. "We said at the start it was a good wicket and we could chase down a big total, but we need to adjust the lengths we bowl in the powerplay so we don't give away as many runs."
