Gidman took over the Gloucestershire captaincy at the start of last season |
Gloucestershire captain Alex Gidman is due to undergo an ankle operation on Thursday which may mean the end of his bowling career. The 28-year-old has admitted that he may have to concentrate solely on his batting if the surgery to his left ankle does not prove successful. Gloucestershire have already had one player under the knife since the end of the season, paceman Ian Saxelby. He is recovering from a knee operation, which was not thought to be serious. As for Gidman's condition, he told the county's website: "It's something that has troubled me for a couple of years. "I am running out of options. "It will be a case of building things up gradually and testing the ankle." Gidman has taken 87 first-class wickets with his right-arm medium seamers in his eight summers at Nevil Road, as well as 57 one-day scalps and seven as an occasional Twenty20 Cup bowler.
