Jon Lewis has decided to give up the Gloucestershire captaincy.

The 33-year-old former England seam bowler has been in charge for three years but has resigned to concentrate on his own game.

Lewis picked up just 35 County Championship wickets last summer as his team finished bottom of Division Two.

"I have given my all to the cause and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge but feel the time is right for a fresh start," he told the club website.

"I look forward to focusing on improving my game so that I can play my best cricket for Gloucestershire."

Gloucestershire are not expected to name Lewis's replacement until the new year.

Chief executive Tom Richardson said: "This year, in particular, he has taken on significantly more responsibility and we are extremely grateful to him.

"As an experienced senior player and international cricketer he still has a great deal to offer both on and off the field."

Apart from finishing bottom in the Championship, Gloucestershire also finished last in their qualifying group in the Twenty20.
