A return of 6-77 revived his team's promotion hopes and reminded England's selectors of his wicket-taking ability.
Gloucestershire replied well to be 115-2 at stumps on day one.
In a first visit to Worcester in May, he built his case for an eventual Test
debut with match figures of 9-90 for England A against Sri Lanka.
Accurate and persistent fast-medium bowling from Lewis exploited some uneven bounce as only Vikram Solanki (60) hit a half-century for the hosts.
But Philip Weston, bowled in the final over for 44 to give Zaheer Khan his 50th
championship wicket of the summer, and Hamish Marshall, unbeaten with 56,
returned from hand injuries to reduce the deficit to 156 with a partnership of
96.
It was all a big comedown for Worcestershire after they had topped 500 in each of their previous four fixtures in Division Two and reeled off three straight
wins before the mid-season break for the Twenty20 Cup.
