Maynard came under fire from chairman Paul Russell in the season |
Glamorgan cricket manager Matthew Maynard says he has a positive feeling about the county's future. They finished the County Championship season fifth in Division Two, losing and winning just twice, but had 56 batting points more than the rest. The one-day competitions were less successful losing eight of their 10 Twenty20 games and half of their eight Pro40 matches. "I'm very positive going into the winter," Maynard told BBC Sport Wales. "I'm very pleased with the way the side has come on, especially in the Championship. "To not get promotion is disappointing really. Fifth, I don't think is a true reflection of how well we've played this year. "I think we played some very good cricket throughout the year and had a number of very close matches where we just couldn't get over the finishing line or the weather interrupted which always plays a part. "We seem to be gelling nicely as a team." | 606: DEBATE |
Maynard believes his side can build on the County Championship campaign next season after missing out on promotion in the final round of matches. But he admits his focus over the winter will be on strengthening his one-day set-up after a miserable season in both the Twenty20 Cup and Pro40 compeition. "The one-day cricket was disappointing," he said. "We played some good stuff and we've got some good ideas going forward. "We didn't make any domestic signings last winter and it gave me an opportunity to see everyone on the staff. "I've done that, made some decisions on who to release and where we need to strengthen. "I think we've got some good young players for the one-dayers," he said. "It is a developing side but if we can supplement that with a couple of signings like the likes of Nick James and one other, I will be very hopeful of an improvement of results in one-day cricket next year."
