Croft agrees new Glamorgan deal

Robert Croft has signed a new two-year contract to remain at Glamorgan.

The 39-year-old former England spinner's current deal with the Dragons was due to finish at the end of this summer.

His new contract will be a flexible one so he can also play a full role in coaching and public relations for the Welsh county.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be staying with the club for the next two seasons," said Croft.

"Glamorgan cricket has been a huge part of my life for many years and I am delighted to be able to contribute to the club both on and off the field over the next two years."

Croft made his first-class debut for Glamorgan in 1989, also captaining his home county between 2003-2006.

Glamorgan chairman Paul Russell has previously admitted they face a battle to keep Croft, who won 21 Test caps for England, saying he was "certain" there were other clubs interested in recruiting him.

606: DEBATE

Croft has had few appearances in limited overs cricket this season but has proven a key performer in the County Championship.

The Welsh speaker is Glamorgan's leading wicket-taker so far this season in their LV County Championship Division Two campaign, with 24 at an average of 32.04.

That haul puts the off-spinner in joint-eighth place among all the Division Two bowlers, with an excellent economy rate of 2.37.

"Robert is a tremendous ambassador for the club both on and off the field and we are delighted that his contract has been extended for the next two years," said Glamorgan chairman Paul Russell.

"It is vitally important that we keep players like Robert at the club to provide leadership and a wealth of playing experience."

It is also understood that Glamorgan are in discussions with Australian batsman Mark Cosgrove to continue his association with the club, possibly as a British passport holder rather than as an overseas player.

There are also rumours that Glamorgan might consider offering Simon Jones the chance to return to his home county, after England's 2005 Ashes quick bowling star was released by Worcester.
