Star South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs has joined Glamorgan for this summer's Twenty20 competition.

Gibbs, who has played 90 Tests and 227 one-day internationals, is eligible to play for the Welsh county from 11 June.

The 34-year-old said: "I'll be coming from the Pro20 competition in South Africa and then the Indian Premier League. I'll be in the perfect mindset.

"I want to help drive the Glamorgan team toward finals day and hopefully get some silverware."

Gibbs added: "I am really excited to be joining Glamorgan for the Twenty20 Cup, which will also be my first experience of county cricket."

In March, 2007, during a World Cup game against Netherlands, Gibbs smashed six sixes off Dan van Bunge - the first time anyone had achieved the feat in a one-day international.

But his recent indifferent Test form cost him his place in the South Africa squad for their tour of Bangladesh - the opener averages 22.40 from his last six matches.

In February, Hyderabad signed Gibbs for the inaugural Indian Premier League, which began on Friday.

Glamorgan manager Matthew Maynard says Gibbs' presence will allow Australian fast-bowler Jason Gillespie - their full-time overseas player - some rest time in the season.

He said: "Herschelle has an outstanding track record, especially in the shorter form of the game.

"I'm sure that our supporters will be eager to see in action for Glamorgan a man who entered the record books in the 2007 World Cup by hitting six sixes in an over.

The signing of Herschelle means that Jason Gillespie will be able to have a short break

"He will certainly complement the experience and talent which Jason will offer to us in other competitions.

"After discussions with Jason Gillespie, it was always our intention to sign a world-class batsman for this competition.

"With so much Championship cricket at the back end of the season, the signing of Herschelle means that Jason will be able to return to action in the other competitions having had a short break."
