Glamorgan had feared Gillespie's registration would not be granted |
Glamorgan's preparations for the new season have been boosted by the news that Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie will be allowed to join them. There were fears his involvement in the rebel Indian Cricket League would lead to him being prevented from playing. But the England and Wales Cricket Board have approved his registration, and he should debut in the Championship match with Middlesex at Lord's on 23 April. The 32-year-old has taken 259 wickets in 71 Tests for Australia. | 606: DEBATE |
Gillespie, Australia's fifth highest Test wicket taker, is Glamorgan's fourth signing of the winter, following batsman Matthew Wood, bowler Adam Shantry and England all-rounder Jamie Dalrymple to Wales. The ICL is in direct opposition to the International Cricket Council-backed Indian Premier League (IPL). Governing bodies have threatened to ban ICL players from first-class cricket.
