Gibbs averages 22.40 from six Tests in the last year

JP Duminy takes Gibbs' place after impressing in South Africa's one-day series win against the West Indies.

Andre Nel and Neil McKenzie have been passed fit, but Monde Zondeki was omitted from the delayed 14-man squad.

Cricket South Africa has been rocked by a bitter dispute over quotas between coach Micky Arthur and president Norman Arendse, who must approve the squad.

The row reportedly stems from South Africa's transformation policy, which sets a target of at least seven non-white players to be included in squads of 15 or more.

However, the initial squad to tour Bangladesh presented to Arendse contains only four - Duminy, Hashim Amla, Ashwell Prince and Makhaya Ntini.

Arthur wanted a full-strength side to acclimatise to sub-continental conditions in preparation for South Africa's three-Test tour to India in March.

But Arendse wanted to see less experienced players involved in the two-Test and three one-day internationals against lowly Bangladesh.

The stand-off prompted Arendse to sack Arthur from the national selection panel, but his attempts were blocked by chief executive Gerald Majola, who said the decision was "unconstitutional".

Arthur's contract as coach stipulates his place as a selector.

And the squad - which was originally scheduled to be named last Tuesday - was eventually approved by Arendse.

"The players believe that the integrity of the selection process has been kept intact by the fact that the squad for Bangladesh is in fact the squad selected by the selectors," said Tony Irish, chief executive of the South African Cricketers' Association.

Gibbs' indifferent Test form has cost him his place in the squad - the opener averages 22.40 from his last six matches.

His replacement Duminy scored 227 runs in four innings during the Proteas' 5-0 one-day series home victory over the West Indies.

The squad is scheduled to leave for Dhaka on Wednesday and the first Test begins on 22 February.
