Mike Powell believes he has returned to Glamorgan an improved batsman |
Mike Powell is delighted to have restarted his Glamorgan career in earnest after life-threatening medical complications last year. The Abergavenny-born batsman underwent four operations following complications from a blood clot in his arm. But the 31-year-old returned to action in two pre-season friendlies at Sussex, making 37 and 0 in the two losses. "It was great to be back: warming up, playing, fielding, the whole shebang with everyone together," Powell said. "I went from worrying about my cricket and missing the next game for Glamorgan to worrying about my life, so the cricket took a little bit of a back seat. | 606: DEBATE |
"It is a cliche but it does put things in perspective and you worry about (cricket) a lot less, which is a good thing that has come out of it." But Powell is still determined to get back amongst the runs when the season-proper begins and believes he returns a better player. "In my little time out of the game I've actually acquired a few more skills that I didn't have before that I was able to work on," Powell added. "I almost feel like a better player than I was before." Powell revealed that he has been working hard on facing spin bowling with cricket manager Matthew Maynard in nets and at a special Glamorgan training camp in India.
