Glamorgan batsman Michael Powell has vowed to end the season with a flurry of runs to guarantee his England debut. Powell has been named in the 30-man one-day squad for September's ICC Champions Trophy, but only 14 players will make the final cut.
"It's a relief to be in it, but it's down to me to make sure I score the runs to get me in the 14," Powell said.
"I haven't scored runs for a couple of weeks now. Maybe I need a few extra hours in the nets but I'll be okay."
Powell, 27, was called up to the England squad for last month's opening NatWest Series game against New Zealand after injury threatened Marcus Trescothick's involvement.
The Somerset opener passes a late fitness test, so Powell's international debut was put on ice.
But after spending a few days in the England camp, Powell admits his appetite for international cricket has certainly been wetted.
"I enjoyed it," he said. "I think Trescothick was always going to be fit and so I never felt I was going to play. "It was nice to be around the boys and get to know some people I didn't know too well.
"There was more pressure and media coverage [than with Glamorgan], but I tried to put that to one side. My job is to bat and forget about the rest."
After making some new acquaintances, Powell could be joined by some familiar faces for the 12-team tournament in England.
Test bowler Simon Jones is named in a one-day squad for the first time, and so too is Yorkshire-born all-rounder Alex Wharf .
"I'm overjoyed," said 29-year-old Wharf, who has been championed by former England captain Alec Stewart.
"You just play everyday and hope one day you might get the chance to play for England, but I never really thought about it too much."
The ICC Champions Trophy runs from 10 to 25 September.
