England overlook Butcher
Mark Butcher
Test veteran Butcher has never played a one-day international
England have left batsman Mark Butcher out of their 30-man one-day squad for September's ICC Champions Trophy.

Ten uncapped players have been added to the recent NatWest Series squad, and the group will be trimmed to a final 14 by 10 August.

"Our ultimate goal as selectors is to build a side for the World Cup," said chairman of selectors David Graveney.

"The make-up of this squad gives a good indication as to the type of team we are looking to develop."

Graveney said Butcher, 31, will have to perform at county level if he is to break into the one-day squad.

"Mark has recently indicated that he would now like to be considered for our one-day side," he explained.

"As the season progresses we will be watching with interest his performances for Surrey."

Warwickshire batsmen Ian Bell and Mark Wagh are included and Gloucestershire pair Alex Gidman and Jonathan Lewis have been named for the first time.

Glamorgan provide three new players - batsman Mike Powell, pace bowler Simon Jones and all-rounder Alex Wharf.

"We will continue to experiment with new players as we seek the right blend between experience and youth," said Graveney.

"Choosing 30 players is a far harder task than picking 14 and I would stress that this is by no means a definitive or exhaustive list.

"A number of seam bowling options were considered and those who are not on the list should not be unduly disheartened about their international prospects."

England provisional squad: Michael Vaughan (Yorks), Kabir Ali (Worcs), James Anderson (Lancs) Gareth Batty (Worcs), Ian Bell (Warks), Ian Blackwell (Somerset), Rikki Clarke (Surrey), Paul Collingwood (Durham), Richard Dawson (Yorks), Andrew Flintoff (Lancs), Alex Gidman (Gloucs), Ashley Giles (Warks), Darren Gough (Essex), Stephen Harmison (Durham), Geraint Jones(wkt, Kent), Simon Jones (Glam), Robert Key (Kent), James Kirtley (Sussex), Jonathan Lewis (Gloucs), Anthony McGrath (Yorks), Sajid Mahmood (Lancs), Graham Napier (Essex) Michael Powell (Glam), Chris Read (wkt, Notts), Vikram Solanki (Worcs), Andrew Strauss (Middx), Chris Tremlett (Hants), Marcus Trescothick (Somerset), Mark Wagh (Warks), Alex Wharf (Glam).
