Aussies overlook Bevan
Michael Bevan
Bevan's days as an international career may be over
Batsman Michael Bevan has been left out of a preliminary 30-man squad named by Australia for September's ICC Champions Trophy.

The 34-year-old has scored 6,912 runs in 232 games at an average of 53 and is still 10th in the world one-day batting rankings.

Bevan was dropped from Australia's list of centrally contracted players earlier this year.

"I believe I still have a lot to offer the game," he said at the time.

"My role has been to win matches when Australia is under pressure and the selectors have told me this role has been diminished in recent times.

"If this changes I will always be available," he added.

The provisional squad includes a number of uncapped players including Brad Hodge, Marcus North and Jonathan Moss, who are currently fufilling county contracts in England with Leicestershire, Durham and Derbyshire.

And Test opening batsman Justin Langer has also been chosen, seven years after he played his last one-day international against England at Lord's.

"This is just the first step in selecting the squad to take part in the Champions Trophy, a tournament Australia has yet to win and one which is important in maintaining the country's status as the best one-day side in the world," said chief selector Trevor Hohns.

"So far we have selected a healthy mix of players - batsmen, bowlers, all-rounders and two specialist wicket-keepers. It gives us a broad range to choose from when it comes to finalising the list.

"That won't be an easy task because there are several players that could fill a variety of roles for us at the tournament."

Australia will take part in a triangular tournament with Pakistan and India in Holland, prior to their arrival in England.

They are in the same first round group as New Zealand and the USA for the Champions Trophy.

Their final 14-man squad has to be confirmed by 10 August.

Provisional Australian squad: A Bichel, N Bracken, M Clarke, A Gilchrist, J Gillespie,B Haddin, I Harvey, N Hauritz, M Hayden, B Hodge, B Hogg, M Hussey, M Kasprowicz, S Katich, J Langer, B Lee, D Lehmann, J Maher, D Martyn, G McGrath, J Moss, M North, R Ponting, A Symonds, S Tait, D Thornely, S Watson, C White, B Williams, D Wright.
