Elliott rejoins Glamorgan

Glamorgan have re-signed former Australian Test batsman Matthew Elliott for the coming season.

Elliott will replace fellow Australian left-hander Jimmy Maher as one of the club's two overseas players.

The second year of Maher's contract was cancelled "by mutual consent" due to personal reasons.

In his previous spell at Sophia Gardens in 2000, Elliott helped Glamorgan reach their first major Lord's final in 23 years.

The 32-year-old, who was with Yorkshire two seasons ago, will team up with fellow Australian Mike Kasprowicz as Glamorgan's overseas pair.

"We are delighted that Matthew Elliott has agreed to rejoin us this summer," Glamorgan chief executive Mike Fatkin said.

The decision to cancel (Jimmy Maher's) contract was taken amicably

"We know Matthew well from his time at Glamorgan in 2000. He is in outstanding form for Victoria and we're looking forward to him joining up with the rest of the squad in early April."

Elliott is currently the second highest run scorer in domestic Australian first-class cricket this season, with 1184 runs for Victoria at an average of 78, including six centuries in 10 matches.

"Jimmy Maher... informed us a few weeks ago that he was unlikely to be available for the opening games of the season for personal reasons," Fatkin added.

"We understand his reasons but he in turn appreciates the importance of having our overseas players available for the start of the season.

"It was unfortunately not possible for us to find a solution acceptable to both parties, though the decision to cancel the contract was taken amicably.

"We hope that there will be an opportunity for him to return to Glamorgan in the future."
