Amla has played 37 Test matches for South Africa

Essex have signed South Africa batsman Hashim Amla as cover for Danish Kaneria, who is with the Pakistan team for the Test series against Sri Lanka.

Amla, 26, joins Essex until the end of July, but could stay longer if leg-spinner Kaneria is selected for the Pakistan one-day international squad.

"I am thrilled with the prospect of joining up with Essex at this important stage of the season," said Amla.

"Promotion is a major focus and I am looking forward to the challenge."

Amla's arrival is subject to obtaining a working visa and gaining clearance from Cricket South Africa.

He is due to make his Essex debut in the County Championship match against Glamorgan, which begins on Tuesday, 7 July.
