Foster signs new deal with Essex

Essex wicketkeeper James Foster has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Chelmsford until 2011.

The 28-year-old, who has played seven Tests for England, made his first-class debut in 2000.

"I am an Essex boy and I am delighted to be signing a new contract until the end of the 2011 season," said Foster.

"I am very excited about the way the team is developing under the leadership of [captain] Mark Pettini and [coach] Paul Grayson."

Foster also confirmed that he will be fit for the start of the 2009 season after undergoing shoulder surgery in October.

"The recovery took a little bit longer than I originally anticipated, however I should be back to full fitness before the start of the season," he said.

Foster scored over 1,500 runs for Essex in 2008 and Grayson believes that the former Durham University student could yet force his way into the England team in time for the Ashes.

"James was the backbone of our success in 2008 and I honestly believe he is the best wicketkeeper in the country," said Grayson.

"If he was to have another good start to this season he could force his way into the Ashes squad, and that is exactly what he deserves."
