Westfield impressed the club in the second half of last season

Promising young pace bowler Mervyn Westfield has signed a two-year contract extension with Essex.

The 20-year-old England Under-19 player, who made his first team debut in 2005, impressed the club with his second XI performances last season.

"We can see the potential there and he now has to stake his claim with the first XI. In Mervyn we have a promising young bowler," said coach Paul Grayson.

Westfield has spent the winter training in Australia.
