Hopes has appeared in nine one-day internationals |
Australian all-rounder James Hopes is likely to pull out of his Derbyshire contract with a shoulder injury. Hopes, who has played nine one-day internationals, recently aggravated the injury and is currently playing with regular painkilling injections.
The 28-year-old Queenslander aims to play for Australia in the World Cup before taking a break from cricket.
"I know it leaves the club in a difficult position but there is just no way I'll be able to play," said Hopes.
"I have always wanted to play county cricket and was delighted at the prospect of linking up with Derbyshire this season.

"I am waiting for final confirmation from the medics with both Queensland and Cricket Australia later this week but it's not looking good.
"I would love to talk to the club about the possibility of coming over in the future. I can't describe how disappointed I am about this season though."
Derbyshire chief executive Tom Sears said: "This is a massive blow as James is an outstanding all-round player who will be hard to replace.
"We are in a position where we have the financial resources to look at the best possible alternative and [director of cricket] Dave Houghton has drawn up a list of potential replacements.
"There are very few genuine all-rounders of James' ability available so it may be that we look at a specialist.
"We have already sounded out some potential signings and are waiting to hear regarding availability.
"One thing I can assure Derbyshire members and supporters is that we are trying for a top-class alternative."
Hopes dislocated his right shoulder 18 months ago but delayed surgery in order to make his one-day debut for Australia.
