Carberry scored 162 in Hampshire's first innings |
Michael Carberry hit his second century of the game as Hampshire's County Championship Division One clash with Durham petered out into a draw. A stalemate was always on the cards as Hampshire resumed on 41-2, 142 ahead. And so it proved as Hampshire reached 203-5 when rain prompted the umpires to call the game off. Carberry hit 107 and Michael Lumb 64 as the pair followed up their stand of 314 on Tuesday with another partnership of 150, while Ian Blackwell claimed 5-79. The stand between Carberry and Lumb spanned 47 overs and saw both players make full use of the small boundaries at May's Bounty, with Lumb hitting four sixes and Carberry three. It was finally ended when Lumb, who hit 158 in the first innings, lofted Blackwell into the deep, where Steve Harmison took the catch. Carberry was stumped by Phil Mustard soon after, before James Vince was bowled to become the left-arm spinner's fifth victim. Rain then arrived to halt proceedings with 44 overs to go, with the result leaving Hampshire seventh and champions Durham eighth in the table as two of six sides separated by only 20 points in the battle for survival.
