Michael Carberry and Michael Lumb fell narrowly short of Hampshire's record second-wicket stand as they dominated Durham's attack at Basingstoke. They came together when Steve Harmison had James Adams caught behind and proceeded to cut loose to share 314. The stand was seven short of the 321 by George Brown and Edward Barrett against Gloucestershire at Southampton in 1920. Carberry eventually fell for 162 before Lumb went for 158 shortly afterwards as Hampshire closed on 373-5. Their stand was also Hampshire's highest for any wicket against Durham and the biggest ever achieved at May's Bounty in Basingstoke. Carberry rode his luck initially and should have been caught at third slip by Dale Benkenstein off Harmison before he reached double figures. But Benkenstein eventually made amends when his delivery was lofted by Carberry to Steve Borthwick at cover with 345 on the board.  | 606: DEBATE |
The stand with Lumb spanned 67.4 overs, with Carberry weighing in with 30 fours in his 243-ball innings. Lumb's 158 was his first County Championship century of the season and the first time he had passed 50 in the competition this summer. After Carberry was finally out, his replacement Neil McKenzie lasted just three balls before he was bowled by spinner Ian Blackwell. Lumb then fell lbw to Callum Thorp and was soon followed in similar fashion by Sean Ervine, Thorp's double strike giving the visitors a glimmer of hope after a torrid day. At stumps James Vince was unbeaten on four and James Tomlinson on eight.
