 Smith's 60 not out came off 155 balls |
Lancashire batsmen Tom Smith and Mark Chilton steered their side out of danger with an unbeaten 98-run stand against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. Earlier in the day, Hampshire skipper Dominic Cork scored a half century as the tail added 82 to their overnight total of 287-6. Facing a deficit of 86 runs, Lancashire were in early trouble when James Tomlinson bowled Paul Horton for five. But Smith and Chilton knuckled down to take the visitors to 106-1 at stumps. Spinner Gary Keedy (4-56) took on former team-mate Cork as the ex-Lancashire man shepherded the Hampshire tail. Cork finished unbeaten on 54 but Keedy removed Tomlinson and Danny Briggs while Glen Chapple (4-68) bowled David Balcombe to close the Hampshire innings on 369. Losing Horley put Lancashire on the back foot but Smith and Chilton spent 48 overs rebuilding the innings, guiding their side to a 20-run lead with nine wickets remaining.
