COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, The Rose Bowl: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Lancashire 262-8 Hants 2pts, Lancs 2pts Match scorecard
Chanderpaul has previously played county cricket for Durham
Hampshire's bowlers gave them control over Lancashire on day one at The Rose Bowl, despite Shivnarine Chanderpaul hitting a century.
After winning the toss, the home side were in early trouble at 41-3.
Chanderpaul, who compiled 118 from 278 balls, then combined with Steven Croft (41) for a fourth-wicket stand of 78.
But no other batsman passed 30 as Dominic Cork, David Balcombe and Danny Briggs each picked up two wickets to reduce the visitors to 262-8 at stumps.
In helpful conditions for the bowlers, Chanderpaul arrived at the crease after Lancashire had lost Tom Smith to a catch at the wicket and Paul Horton to another at second slip off Balcombe - and immediately saw Mark Chilton edge behind.
Croft arrived to accompany the West Indies international into the afternoon session, but when he chopped left-arm spinner Briggs onto his stumps and Gareth Cross was caught behind off the same bowler, seemingly only Chanderpaul stood in Hampshire's way.
But he found found a willing ally in Luke Sutton (29) for a sixth-wicket stand of 77 and reached his first century for Lancashire with his 13th boundary shortly after Sutton departed to a smart catch at first slip by James Vince.
Chanderpaul's resistance was finally broken when Cork, who had previously accounted for Lancashire captain Glen Chapple, had him caught by debutant wicketkeeper Michael Bates.
