Mustard faced 103 balls for his unbeaten 74, hitting eight fours |
Captain Phil Mustard hit an unbeaten 71 to ensure that Durham earned a draw with Lancashire at Chester-le-Street. After rain had ruined much of the first three days, the hosts resumed on 96-5 in their first innings, still 99 short of avoiding the follow on. But Mustard, who was dropped at slip by Paul Horton on 39, shared 61 for the sixth wicket with Ben Stokes (37) to help Durham to safety on 216 all out. Lancashire had reached 91-4 in their second innings when a draw was agreed. It looked as though Stokes would be at the crease to guide Durham past the follow on mark, but his was the first wicket of the day to fall when he sliced James Anderson (3-74) to point. | 606: DEBATE |
Liam Plunkett was caught behind to become the first of Glen Chapple's (5-65) three final-day victims, but the crucial moment came when Mustard was missed by Horton off the same bowler with Durham still 20 shy of making Lancashire bat again. Chapple bowled Callum Thorpe soon after but Mustard scraped the runs Durham needed before watching on from the other end as the Lancashire captain mopped up the tail. Stephen Moore, Mark Chilton and Shivnarine Chanderpaul then all passed 20 as Lancashire meandered to the close.
