In-form opener Adam Lyth helped put high-flying Yorkshire in control going into the final day at The Rose Bowl.

Lyth, who hit 133 in the first innings, was unbeaten at the close on 64, having shared an unbroken second-wicket stand of 116 with Anthony McGrath (60no).

Yorkshire closed the third day on 152-1, leading Hampshire by 216 runs.

Earlier, the hosts had declared their first innings on 351-9, Neil McKenzie top-scoring with 91, while Adil Rashid finished with 4-62.

Resuming on 162-3, Hampshire progressed serenely to 200 during an overcast morning session.

A comical mix-up got rid of James Vince on 24 when both batsmen ended up at the same end to curtail his 57-run stand with McKenzie.

Hampshire's middle and lower order all chipped in with useful contributions, but none of the final seven could score more than David Balcombe's 30.

Dominic Cork (26), Nic Pothas (23) and Sean Ervine (20) each squandered good starts in the face of some disciplined Yorkshire bowling as Hampshire limped towards 350 and an extra batting point.

As soon as that target was reached - and with his side still 64 behind - Pothas declared, in a bid to force a positive result.

Yorkshire lost the wicket of Joe Sayers (13) by the close, but Lyth and McGrath's unbeaten partnership piled more misery on the top-flight's bottom club.

Lyth, the country's leading scorer, moved to 819 Championship runs for the season, while McGrath showed the sort of form which saw him gain England honours in 2003 to smash a 66-ball 50.
