CLYDESDALE BANK 40, Cardiff: Surrey 227-8 beat Glamorgan 223-8 by two wickets Match scorecard
Chris Schofield hit his eighth one-day half century to win it for Surrey |
Ex-England all-rounder Chris Schofield saw Surrey to a narrow two-wicket CB 40 win against Glamorgan in Cardiff with just eight balls to spare. Chasing a Glamorgan total of 223-8 (in which Tom Maynard top scored with 64 and Mark Cosgrove hit 61), Surrey looked in trouble on 126-6. But Schofield put on a crucial 53 with another former England spinner Gareth Batty (22) for the seventh wicket. And he was still there at the end on 64 to see his side to a third group win. Surrey, still unbeaten in this competition, have now gone second in Group A, a point behind leaders Somerset. Spinners Schofield and Batty, who had to bat with a runner, also proved effective with the ball, taking two wickets apiece. Glamorgan's slide began when Batty had Jim Allenby caught off a top edge attempting a slog sweep after putting on 88 for the first wicket in 13 overs. They then lost wickets at regular intervals until Maynard steadied the ship. But, although Glamorgan were still slight favourites, when Surrey took the batting power play quite early and Schofield plundered a six and a four off consecutive Chris Ashling deliveries, he did not look back as he saw the visitors home. And that condemned Glamorgan to another disappointing defeat after they went down to the Unicorns last weekend.
