Somerset and Essex were again frustrated by the weather as their game at Taunton fizzled out into a draw.

After losing the whole of the previous day to the weather, just 50 overs of play were possible on Friday.

In that time, Essex moved from 252-5 in reply to Somerset's 387 to be bowled out for 353, fast bowler David Masters bludgeoning 50 from just 38 balls.

Somerset openers Marcus Trescothick and Arul Suppiah then dodged the showers to reach 100-0 before a draw was agreed.

Essex had added just 13 runs to their overnight score when, with the ninth ball of the day, left-arm seamer Charl Willoughby (2-87) trapped Ryan ten Doeschate leg before for 21.

A similar fate befell James Foster (35) off the bowling of Peter Trego six overs later before Masters took over.

The number nine hit 11 fours, helping to add 50 for the eighth wicket before Tim Phillips (22) was caught by Nick Compton off Willoughby.

Another 23 runs were added for the ninth wicket but Masters was eventually caught at mid on off the bowling of Damien Wright and leg-spinner Michael Munday (4-105) had last man Maurice Chambers lbw to wrap up the innings.

After a short spell before lunch only 10 overs were possible in the afternoon session, with Trescothick (42no) and Suppiah (47no) notching a century stand before Somerset declared.
