Taunton
Persistent rain ensured no play was possible at Taunton on Thursday

No play was possible on day three of the County Championship match between Somerset and Essex at Taunton.

Rain began falling at 0900 BST and umpires Barry Dudleston and Jeff Evans eventually abandoned play for the day at 1630 BST.

Essex will begin day four on 262-5 in reply to Somerset's 387.

The visitors have been boosted by the news that New Zealand pace bowler Chris Martin has arrived and is available for Sunday's game against Middlesex.

Martin's arrival was delayed because of the travel chaos caused by the volcanic ash cloud.

Essex coach Paul Grayson told BBC Essex:
"We'll have a chat in the morning with Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick and see if we can set a game up.

"We had a little chat earlier about possibly trying to do something because both sides want to play to win so, weather permitting, we'll try and get a game going.

"Chris Martin arrived today and will join up with the team at the weekend.

"We're not sure about Danish Kaneria at the moment, he's due to be in the country in two or three weeks time."
