Billy Godleman hit his maiden Essex century in his fourth Championship game for the county, as honours ended even with Somerset on day two at Taunton.

Godleman, who hit 92 on his Essex debut but has failed to get past double figures since, plundered 15 boundaries on his way to 106.

The visitors were 262-5 at the close, Somerset's Mike Munday taking 3-100.

Earlier, the home side had been dismissed for 387, paceman David Masters finishing with 4-83.

Peter Trego finished unbeaten on 71, sharing a last-wicket stand of 39 with Charl Willoughby, as Somerset added 59 to their overnight total.

Their partnership ended in unfortunate fashion when Trego drove back a ball from Tim Phillips, who deflected it on to the stumps with Willoughby out of his ground.

Trego's innings occupied 87 balls, featuring 11 fours and two sixes, another example of the talent which saw him selected in England's provisional squad for the World Twenty20.

The Essex reply was then launched in confident fashion by Godleman, who has achieved his highest first-class score of 113 for Middlesex on the same ground in 2007, and England opener Alastair Cook (41).

Wickets fell regularly throughout the afternoon, Munday proving the biggest threat, but there were also scalps for Willoughby and Arul Suppiah.
