LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Trent Bridge: Nottinghamshire 250 and 250-8 beat Somerset 272 & 227 by two wickets Notts 21pts, Somerset 5pts Match scorecard
Hashim Amla steered Notts to victory with an unbeaten half century |
Hashim Amla drew on his international experience to steer Nottinghamshire to a nail-biting two-wicket victory. Chasing 250, the South African batsman kept his nerve as the wickets kept falling, finishing on 64 not out. Mark Wagh hit 70, but Charl Willoughby took three wickets and Alfonso Thomas two as Somerset kept chipping away. Earlier, a partnership of 136 between Marcus Trescothick (98) and Damien Wright (78) put Somerset in with a chance as they were bowled out for 272. Somerset resumed on 120-6, only 142 ahead, but Trescothick and Wright continued their brilliant seventh-wicket partnership with a succession of boundaries in the morning session. England seamer Stuart Broad was given short shrift with his only three overs of the day going for 25 as Wright raced to his half-century from 51 balls, thumping 15 fours before he was bowled by a shooter from Luke Fletcher. Franks arrived to wrap up the innings, first denying Trescothick a well-deserved century as the left-hander's attempted guide down to third man ended in the hands of Ali Brown at a wide first slip, before Thomas edged to second slip and Willoughby was bowled. Notts lost Neil Edwards to the sixth ball of the innings, his defensive edge going straight to Trescothick at slip, but Wagh and Shafayat batted with increasing confidence as Notts reached tea without losing any further wickets. But when Shafayat was lbw to Wright and Wagh was caught in the gully in the following over, Somerset sniffed an opportunity. Thomas had Samit Patel lbw with a delivery that may have been sliding down the leg-side and Zander de Bruyn removed Ali Brown soon after. In a tense finish, Amla kept his cool despite the loss of Chris Read, Franks and Broad, hitting Willoughby for 18 in one over, and ending the match with a pull to the square leg boundary to finish unbeaten on 64 from 73 balls with nine fours and a six.
