LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Trent Bridge: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Somerset 272, Nottinghamshire 26-2 Notts 3pts, Somerset 2pts Match scorecard
Marcus Trescothick (left) watches on as Stuart Broad bowls at Trent Bridge
Stuart Broad picked up three wickets as Nottinghamshire bowled Somerset out for 272 on day one at Trent Bridge. Broad (3-79), who requested to play as a warm up for the ICC World Twenty20, accounted for Marcus Trescothick as the visitors slumped to 78-5. But Peter Trego (66) and Nick Compton (42) led the Somerset recovery, with Damien Wright (43) and Alfonso Thomas (40 not out) also chipping in. Thomas and Charl Willoughby then struck to leave Notts 26-2 at the close. Home captain Chris Read won the toss and invited Somerset to bat on a green pitch but Broad began in wayward fashion to allow Trescothick to pick up several boundaries through the covers. However, after Andre Adams encouraged Arul Suppiah to edge to slip, Broad exacted revenge with a lifting delivery that the former England opener miscued to Hashim Amla at mid-wicket. Compton and James Hildreth survived for almost an hour before Luke Fletcher (2-48) trapped Hildreth lbw and Paul Franks (3-45) accounted for Zander de Bruyn and Craig Kieswetter. Trego and Compton began the fightback with a sixth-wicket stand of 64 and Wright and Thomas opened their shoulders to take the score past 250. Willoughby had Neil Edwards lbw with the third ball of the Notts innings and Thomas had Bilal Shafayat caught at slip to reduce the hosts to 8-2, but Mark Wagh and Amla survived until the close.
