LV= COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Hove: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Surrey 205 & 243-9, Sussex 416 (Sussex 5 pts, Surrey 3 pts) Match scorecard
Sussex celebrate the wicket of Surrey captain Rory Hamilton-Brown |
Rana Naved-ul-Hasan hit an unbeaten 68 before taking 3-89 to leave Sussex on the brink of victory over Surrey. Naved added 124 for the ninth wicket with Robin Martin-Jenkins (64) as Sussex were eventually bowled out for 416, a first-innings lead of 211. And after Corey Collymore (2-16) and Luke Wright (3-44) ripped out the top of the Surrey batting line-up, Naved claimed three quick scalps. Usman Afzaal hit 87 but Surrey closed on 243-9, just 32 ahead. It was the partnership between Naved and Martin-Jenkins that really took the game away from Surrey as they scored their runs in just 21 overs after Jade Dernbach had removed Monty Panesar. And they were struggling in their bid to get back into the game with the bat from the moment Collymore trapped Matthew Spriegel leg before for a duck. Arun Harinath then shouldered arms to Collymore and lost his off stump before Wright claimed the big wicket of Mark Ramprakash, pinning him lbw for 14. Afzaal and Steve Davies threatened to pull Surrey back into contention with a stand of 138 for the fourth wicket. But Wright had Davies, who had twice been dropped, taken at slip by Mike Yardy and then had Afzaal caught by a diving Murray Goodwin at point, but not before the former England Test batsman had passed 13,500 first-class runs. Naved's reverse swing then accounted for Gareth Batty, Rory Hamilton-Brown and Andre Nel, but although Sussex failed to finish Surrey off after claiming the extra half hour, they will be confident of doing so on the final morning.
