Match scorecard

Goodwin top scored for Sussex with 74

Michael Yardy, Murray Goodwin and Luke Wright all hit half-centuries as Sussex ground their way to a lead over Surrey.

Surrey could only add six to their overnight 199-7 as Robin Martin-Jenkins (5-45) and Naved-ul-Hasan (4-28) mopped up the tail.

Sussex made slow progress in reply, reaching 29-2 at lunch off 23 overs.

But they picked up the pace in the afternoon to close on 278-7, a lead of 73 thanks to Yardy (68), Goodwin (74) and Wright (63).

Sussex made a sensational start to the day as Naved took two wickets with the first two balls, bowling Andre Nel off his pads before yorking fellow Pakistani Rao Iftikhar.

And Martin-Jenkins wrapped up the Surrey innings when Chris Schofield padded up to an inswinger to complete only the eighth five-wicket haul of his career and post his best figures at Hove for nearly three years.

But Sussex made painfully slow process before lunch before Yardy, who was badly dropped at second slip by Surrey captain Rory Hamilton-Brown on 29, and Goodwin came more to life in sharing a third-wicket stand of 117 in 33 overs.

Nevertheless, Yardy's 68 still took 187 balls, and it was left to Wright to give the innings real impetus, hitting nine fours and a six in his 68-ball 63.

Sussex's lead was just 36 when he became Iftikhar's second victim, splicing a pull to Schofield.

Michael Thornely and Andrew Hodd then survived a testing period against the second new ball to stretch Sussex's lead before both fell to Jade Dernbach late on - Thornely to the penultimate ball of the day.
