LV= COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Hove: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Surrey 199-7 v Sussex (Sussex 2 pts, Surrey 0 pts) Match scorecard Sussex celebrate taking the wicket of returning Surrey captain Rory Hamilton-Brown
Sussex all-rounder Robin Martin-Jenkins took four wickets to ensure that Surrey captain Rory Hamilton-Brown endured a largely unproductive return to Hove. Martin-Jenkins' first two strikes helped reduce Surrey to 15-3, with the visitors later slipping to 81-5. But opener Arun Harinath then made a painstaking 62 from 290 deliveries, well supported by Chris Schofield (44no), to keep the hosts at bay. Martin-Jenkins ended Harinath's vigil before the close to leave Surrey 199-7. Hamilton-Brown, who left Sussex to re-join Surrey over the winter, lost the toss and was invited to bat by home skipper Mike Yardy. Yardy's decision looked a good one when Matt Spriegel edged Rana Naved-ul-Hasan to wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd and Martin-Jenkins accounted for Mark Ramprakash and Usman Afzaal. Hamilton-Brown joined Harinath for a fourth-wicket stand of 65, but after being dropped by Hodd off Martin-Jenkins for 11, eventually edged Rana to slip for 36. Steven Davies followed for just one to again leave Surrey in deep trouble, but Harinath, who was dropped on 17 and 47, stood firm to grind out his half-century in 232 balls. He added 55 for the sixth wicket with Gareth Batty (23) and 62 for the seventh wicket with Schofield before mis-timing a pull off Martin-Jenkins into the hands of Luke Wright.
