Leicestershire wobble on way to win over Northants
LV= COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Grace Road: Leicestershire 395 & 65-4 beat Northants 190 & 269 by six wickets Leics 22pts, Northants 2pts Match scorecard
Hoggard took two wickets in his first game as Leicestershire captain
New captain Matthew Hoggard saw his Leicestershire side survive a final morning wobble to complete a six-wicket win over Northants.
The Foxes began the final day of Hoggard's first game in charge on 14-1, needing just another 51 to win.
But they slumped to 29-4 as David Lucas and Jack Brooks both made inroads.
Josh Cobb (20no) and Tom New (14no) steadied the ship, sharing an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 36 to see Leicestershire over the finishing line.
It completed a perfect start to former England paceman Hoggard's reign at Grace Road after joining Leicestershire from Yorkshire during the winter.
He has taken over a side that finished bottom of the County Championship last season, winning just two games.
Leicester skipper Matthew Hoggard told BBC Radio Leicestershire:
"A three-day, one-hour victory is fantastic.
"I thought the boys stuck to their task well throughout the three days.
"Losing the toss as skipper was a help because we were 50-50 about what to do and scoring 395 on the first day of the Championship set us up.
Northamptonshire head coach David Capel told BBC Radio Northampton:
"In the final session the bowlers came in well, and it was very encouraging to see that kind of fight.
"But Leicestershire produced and sustained pressure for long periods of time, and we didn't really do that.
"They looked like a team that has had time together. By contrast we've had one day in the field by being in England (in pre-season). It was like this was the first chance we'd had to gel together, and that showed on the first day."
