Pakistan leg spinner Kaneria is now just six short of 800 first-class wickets

Danish Kaneria took his first-class haul to 68 wickets this season, as Essex bowled fellow promotion hopefuls Northants out for 299.

After rain washed out day one, Kaneria took 5-66 to deny the visitors vital batting points.

It could have been much worse but for 85 from South African Andrew Hall, who helped lead a a recovery when Northants were struggling on 180-7.

Essex then had to negotiate three overs before the close of play and were 3-0.
