Smith ended with figures of 6-29

Dwayne Smith took a hat-trick in a quadruple-wicket maiden to send Sussex to a convincing Pro40 Divison One victory against Nottinghamshire.

Sussex Sharks had set Nottinghamshire a target of 255 for victory with Rory Hamilton-Brown (49) and Ed Joyce (42) top scoring for the league leaders.

Bottom-placed Nottinghamshire had been well set to reach that target having made it to 67-1 before Smith struck.

Sussex bowled Notts out for 102 with Smith contributing figures of 6-29.

It gave Sussex a 152-run victory, with the two points consolidating their position at the top of the Pro40 Division One.

Sussex's innings got off to a flying start with Hamilton-Brown smashing 49 off just 27 balls with six fours and three sixes in an opening stand of 103 with Joyce.

But they were pegged back by Adam Voges who picked up Joyce for 42 with his first ball and finished with 3-25.

Murray Goodwin (39) gave him a simple return catch and Smith, who had struck two sixes out of the ground in the previous over from Samit Patel, sliced a drive to backward point for 27.

Patel removed Mike Yardy (34) and Martin-Jenkins (three) with successive deliveries in the penultimate over while Sussex's cause was not helped by the needless run outs of Piyush Chawla and Andrew Hodd.

Notts made a decent start in their pursuit of a target of 255, despite the early departure of acting captain Matt Wood who was deceived by Chad Keegan's slower ball.

Akhil Patel, also making his one-day debut for the Outlaws, and Hales took the score to 67 in the 12th over.

But when Patel mis-timed a drive at Robin Martin-Jenkins' first ball it began an astonishing collapse which saw six wickets fall for six runs in 24 balls.

It was sensational stuff from Smith, who began his haul when he yorked Australian Voges for one.

His stunning over started when he had Alex Hales brilliantly caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Hodd off the first ball of the over.

Two dot balls followed before Bilal Shafayat was caught at short fine-leg, Kevin O'Brien walked in front of a straight one and Jake Ball, on his one-day debut, looked shell-shocked as Smith trimmed his off bail.

There was no hope for Nottinghamshire at 73-7 and Smith finished with 6-29 when he bowled Alex Carter as the Outlaws were dismissed for 102, their last nine wickets having fallen for 35 runs in 9.1 overs.
