Tom Lungley is playing only his second Championship game for Lancashire
Lancashire loan man Tom Lungley helped his new side turn the tables on day two of the Roses Match at Headingley.
Despite a fine first Championship ton of the summer from former Lancashire skipper Mark Chilton (111), the visitors were still dismissed for 276.
But Yorkshire quickly hit trouble against Kyle Hogg and Lungley (3-40).
In trouble on 72-5, they were in danger of following on but England hopeful Tim Bresnan's unbeaten 46 saw them past that scare to reach 131-5 by the close.
After a 20-minute delay at the start of the day, Lancashire continued their first innings on 226-7 with Chilton on 73. But further rain meant only 3.2 overs were possible in the morning session.
There was another short break early in the afternoon before conditions improved, allowing the visitors to eke out a second batting bonus point.
It also gave the gritty Chilton the chance to earn the accolade he deserved for a flawless first Champinship century of the summer.
And England one-day all-rounder Adil Rashid, in what is expected to be his last Championship appearance of the summer before heading off on international duty, completed a second five-wicket haul in consecutive games.
It had been slow progress for Lancashire but Yorkshire found it no easier.
From the very first ball of their innings, Jacques Rudolph cut Hogg into the hands of fellow South African Francois du Plessis at point.
And, although home skipper Anthony McGrath helped himself to three boundaries in an over from Oliver Newby, it was not long before Lungley chipped in with a double strike to reduce Yorkshire to 35-3.
The 30-year-old seamer, signed on loan from Derbyshire, also struck with his first delivery of the innings, although only thanks to another brilliant Steven Croft catch, this one an overhead effort at deep mid-wicket to remove McGrath.
There was another success for Lungley in his next over when Andrew Gale got a leading edge as he shaped to play on the legside and provided a gentle return catch.
Joe Sayers was missed when Mal Loye failed to hold on to a hard slash in the gully which caused him to leave the field for treatment to his right hand.
After Jonny Bairstow also gave a simple return catch to Newby, a short stoppage for rain left Yorkshire on 68-4. And, when play resumed, Lungley caused more damage in his splendid spell from the Kirkstall Lane End, trapping Sayers lbw for 17.
But Gerard Brophy and Bresnan saw off Lungley, who was rested with exemplary figures of 3-28 from 10 overs. And their sixth wicket stand was worth 59 by stumps.
Lancashire batsman Mark Chilton told BBC Radio Manchester:
"It was a hard-fought century and it means a lot in a game like this.
"I never felt particularly fluent but I got there in the end and I hope it will prove a significant score in the match.
"Tom Lungley's been great. It's a funny situation when someone comes in on loan but he's not been fazed by it. He bowled really good lines and put the Yorkshire batsmen under pressure."
