Match scorecard

Ed Joyce
Joyce lacked support as Sussex crashed to defeat

Ed Joyce's battling 94 was not enough for Sussex as Somerset moved top of the Pro40 table with victory at Taunton.

After Somerset won the toss, openers Marcus Trescothick (36) and Craig Kieswetter (45) gave them a good start.

James Hildreth (45) and Zander de Bruyn (73) added 91 for the third wicket as Somerset posted a total of 238-5.

Opener Joyce led the reply but he was last out as the visitors fell 49 runs short with 20 balls remaining, while no other Sussex batsman passed 20.

The match was a repeat of Saturday's Twenty20 Cup final, in which Sussex triumphed - but Somerset showed they had no hangover from that game as their top order laid into Sussex's bowlers.

606: DEBATE

Trescothick and Kieswetter both eventually holed out at mid-on from the bowling of Luke Wright, who learned earlier in the day that he had kept his place in England's one-day squad.

De Bruyn smashed three sixes and three fours in his 73 from 68 balls before he fell in the 38th over.

Somerset captain Justin Langer, who did not bat, sprang a surprise by handing the new ball to left-arm spinner Arul Suppiah, but he soon removed Rory Hamilton-Brown and Wright cheaply.

Ben Phillips (3-31) accounted for danger men Murray Goodwin and Mike Yardy, while the big-hitting Dwayne Smith made just two.

Kieswetter took two catches and made two smart stumpings as Joyce's team-mates fell around him, before the opener was caught at long-on going for his hundred.
