Rogers century puts Derbys on top

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Grace Road:
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Leicestershire 177 Derbyshire 277-2
(Derbys 5pts, Leics 0pts)
11-14 August 2009

Chris Rogers
Rogers' unbeaten 122 was his third championship century of the season

Chris Rogers hit a season's best 122 not out as Derbyshire moved into a strong position on a rain-affected second day against Leicestershire.

No play was possible until mid-afternoon at Grace Road.

But, when they did get underway, the visitors moved from their 67-1 overnight to 277-2, a lead of 100.

Rogers and Greg Smith (74no) put on an unbroken 145 for the third wicket as the Leicestershire attack were put to the sword.

Off-spinner Jigar Naik was the only wicket-taker during the 60 overs possible, bowling Garry Park off his pads for 41 to end a second-wicket stand of 83 with Rogers, which at the time left Derbyshire 132-2.

Leicestershire might have felt they did not enjoy the rub of the green early on as the ball nipped around and Rogers struggled to find his timing, bringing up his 50 in 149 balls.

But he looked a different player after tea as he and Smith brought up their century partnership in 22 overs.

Rogers went on to reach three figures himself off 230 balls, with seven boundaries. But he was lucky to still be there at stumps after being dropped at slip by HD Ackerman off Claude Henderson in the penultimate over of the day.
