COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Grace Road: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Derbyshire 67-1, Leicestershire 177 (Leics 0pts, Derbys 3pts) 11-14 August 2009
Steffan Jones is on loan at Derbyshire from Somerset |
Steffan Jones took four wickets as promotion-chasing Derbyshire took control against Leicestershire on day one at Grace Road. Jones (4-43) picked up the first two and last two wickets to fall as the hosts were shot out for just 177. Greg Smith (3-31) also took three wickets, only young James Taylor (45) providing any real resistance. Claude Henderson then trapped Wayne Madsen lbw before the close, with the visitors 67-1 at stumps, 110 behind. After Leicestershire won the toss, Jones removed Matt Boyce and Boeta Dippenaar, both for ducks, to reduce the hosts to 9-2. Smith then persuaded HD Ackerman to edge to Chris Rogers at slip, before Leicestershire's Greg Smith was caught in the gully off Tim Groenewald for a stubborn 20. Taylor and Tom New then combined for a fifth-wicket stand of 37, the highest partnership of the innings, but when New was caught by Garry Park off Smith, it sparked a collapse which saw the hosts lose their last six wickets for 77 runs. It is the third time in six home matches that bottom-of-the-table Leicestershire have failed to collect a batting point in County Championship Division Two this season. Rogers and Madsen shared 49 for the first wicket before Henderson accounted for Madsen, leaving Park to accompany Rogers to the close. The only bad news for Derbyshire came in the shape of a shoulder injury to all-rounder Graham Wagg. He pulled up in his 13th over and will have a scan on Wednesday.
