Sadler six wins it for Derbyshire

PRO40 DIVISION TWO, Whitgift School:
Derbyshire 286-6 beat Surrey 282-5 by four wickets
(Derbys 2pts, Surrey 0pts)

John Sadler
Sadler hit two sixes and a four in his 28-ball 33 not out

John Sadler hit Chris Schofield for six off the first ball of the final over to secure Derbyshire a four-wicket Pro40 victory over Surrey at Whitgift School.

Set 283 to win, the platform for the visitors' run chase was laid by their top three of Chris Rogers (49), Garry Park (64) and Greg Smith (77).

Sadler then saw them over the line at 286-6 with an unbeaten 33.

Earlier, Schofield had hit 66 and Michael Brown 51 off 34 balls as Surrey posted 282-5 from their 40 overs.

It was Derbyshire's highest-ever run chase in the one-day league to hand Surrey a third straight defeat in this season's competition.

Derbyshire looked favourites for long spells following a strong start to their reply as openers Rogers and Park put on 78 in 11 overs before Park and Smith added 98 in 14 overs for the second wicket.

But the home side thought they were in with a sniff of victory themselves as the run rate crept up after Smith was out in the 31st over.

Derbyshire were left needing 43 off the last five overs, but Sadler then shared an unbroken 39 for the seventh wicket with Tom Poynton, sealing victory by sweeping leg spinner Schofield for six with five balls to spare.

Surrey, who lost Chris Murtagh in the fifth over, had earlier been given a flying start by Brown, who reached his half-century in only 33 balls with 10 fours before being bowled next ball by Smith.

Captain Stewart Walters was then run out before a fourth-wicket stand of 93 in 15 overs between Schofield and Usman Afzaal kept up their momentum.

And, although Matthew Spriegel and Laurie Evans put on an unbroken 72 in the last seven overs after Afzaal and Schofield had departed, it was not enough to deny Derbyshire victory.
