COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Arundel: Sussex 441 and 138-2 drew with Hampshire 346 (Sussex 12pts, Hants 10pts)
Collymore's 4-66 was his best bowling return of the season |
West Indian paceman Corey Collymore took season-best figures of 4-66 but could not prevent Sussex's clash with Hampshire at Arundel ending in a draw. Collymore sparked a Hampshire collapse as they slumped from 227-2 overnight to 279-7 and in danger of following on. But Dominic Cork scored 36 to take the visitors to safety before they were dismissed for 346, a deficit of 95. With nothing to play for, the hosts reached 138-2 before a halt was called, Michael Yardy unbeaten on 47. Chris Nash smashed 37 off 27 balls in an opening stand of 49 with Yardy, who then shared a second-wicket partnership of 86 with Ed Joyce (43). The draw always looked the most likely result after virtually all of day three was washed out. But Sussex sensed an unlikely victory as three wickets fell for 12 runs at the start of play. Collymore struck with his first ball, having Michael Lumb caught at slip by Yardy. Jason Lewry then removed Liam Dawson before Collymore struck again, trapping John Crawley leg before. He then removed Dimitri Mascarenhas and Sean Ervine in quick succession to leave the visitors in trouble. But Sussex were unable to wrap up the tail until Cork had guided Hampshire to safety, although the visitors fell short of a fourth batting bonus point.
